31st October

Sitting on my bed with my Sony laptop in front of me, I was looking through the calendar on the board. Suddenly thinking, time flies so fast it is already October 2013. I was scanning the calendar and my eyes immediately directed at a box written 31st October on it. That makes me thinking about the most memorable event in my life. The event happens on 31st October 2010 and I was born on 31st October 1994.

It was in the morning at Saujana Utama, a housing area at Sungai Buloh. I was sitting with my siblings in the living room and enjoyed watching our favourite drama on television. Suddenly, I felt weird. I wonder where my mom is. Why doesn’t she join us watching television because she also likes that drama? I went down the stairs and searching for my mom, it was so quiet and make me felt even more weird. I continued searching and suddenly the phone rings. It was a call from my neighbour.

She told me that my mom was at her house and having shortness of breath. I was shocked and my tears drop. Immediately, I run and told my younger sister and brothers. I grab my scarf and run to my neighbour’s house. I don’t know what to do,my father was in overseas. Luckily, I have a good neighbour, she called the ambulance for me.  Then I called my aunt from Shah Alam and told her about the incident.

A few minutes later, an ambulance from Hospital Sungai Buloh arrived. My aunt also arrived after that. My mom was brought into the ambulance. Someone has to follow my mom in the ambulance. Since I am the eldest, my aunt asked me to ride the ambulance and accompanying my mom. I was a little bit afraid, it was my first time riding an ambulance but the feeling went away because I was worried about my mom’s condition.

As we know, the ambulance drives so fast and I was like,Where should I hold? How can I make myself comfortable? There was nothing, there were no seat belts. I was trying to seat comfortably and trying to cool down my mom. Finally, I arrived at the hospital and went to emergency department. I had been asked to register my mom. Just imagine I was alone that time. Thank God I can settled down the registration. Then, my aunt arrived with my siblings.

My mom was having shortness of breath because of her high blood pressure. After been treated, my mom can be taken home. I was happy that it is not continuous and I can brought my mom home. Yes, it was the most memorable event happen in my life because it was on my birthday, something bad happen to my mom and the first time I ride and ambulance.

BE OPTIMIST

Happiness, depressed, victory and regret, all those kind of things colour  my life. One thing that kept flashback in my mind when I had been asked to write about a memorable event in my life is the day that I got my SPM result. It really affected me and perhaps it may be one of the reasons why I am here in the National University of Malaysia right now.

Everything was going smoothly that morning and even me did not felt anything neither nervous nor anxious. It was the day that SPM result was announced. I planned all the things that I wanted to do once I arrived my school especially meeting my friends and teachers. However, it turned out  the other way. I was very surprised with my result as it was really beyond my target. On that time, I could not think of any other than went home. I did not approached anybody after that. I could not  look at my parents faces. It seems like I could feel their disappointment even though they tried to console me. I kept crying almost all the day.

At night, I calmed down a bit as I had told my result to my teacher and friends that I closed to. Instead of my parents, they were also really good in motivating me. They even gave me some words to boost up my spirit back. I realized something when my friend reminded me that the gift from God is regarding our expectations. To be honest, I did not really confident that I would get a flying colours result even though my target was high enough. The feeling was  not the same when I sat for my PMR .

As the time goes by, I recognized that every single thing that happened in our life is really meant to us. There is always a good reason that makes it fall on us. We just need to be optimist and go through it.Learning process is not occurred in class only . There is always something precious that we could learn from our surrounding in our daily life. As for me, I recalled back things that I have done wrong and I will make sure that I will not repeat the same thing. Whenever I think back about this, it encouraged me to do much more better afterward.I learned my lesson. How about you?

BEGINNING OF THE COLLEGE LIFE

Throughout life I have had many memorable events. The memorable events that will be the best thing or bad thing happened that will be remembered forever. The memorable events that I most remembered is at the beginning of the college life. There was an orientation week that must be followed of all new undergraduates. The week orientation program runs for one week only. At  the beginning we are introduced to the line a facilitator who will manage activities throughout the week orientation program runs.  Consist of  a total of 30 seniors and 20 members of the Red Cross societies.
At the first day we were introduced to the positions held by each facilitator. They  introduce themselves by telling their name, cost, and year study. We are all required to remember them all so easy to talk to if there are any problems. Initially quite difficult for us to remembered all because too many facilitators., but day by day we are beginning to remembered each facilitators. Orientation  week started with the opening ceremony attended by college principals, members, fellows, and many more. Opening  started in the morning. All  new undergraduates are required to wear formal attire.
During  the orientation week program runs various activities that had been organized such as visiting the campus, morning exercises, singing songs campus, working in a team and much more. But the most enjoyable activities is work in teams. We were divided into small groups and monitored by a facilitator to assist if need something. At first we have to introduce ourselves before the start of activities for the group. Some of the activities needed are all members of the group must given idea on how to  draw a logo, give the group name for the group and create their own cheers. When finished all groups began to introduce their group. Situation  in the halls was very buzzing with cheers of their respective groups. Besides  that’s each  group is required to perform contest at the closing night orientation week . Our group has chosen acting as the show will be presented.

The title of our acting is event in Lahad Datu. At the practice time, we had to practice every night and all of our members practiced hard . Before the contest started we got together to practice once again. Our  group  facilitators  came to encourage us . Finally, we got the third prize all of us were happy, everyone all said  that our performance was perfect and we did our best. Because of this contest, our friendships  became closer together and trusted  in each other.  Although the practice process was so tired , the ending was satisfied. We are very appreciate  our facilitators and our team leader if we had not have the encouragement they gave us, we may not finish this contest so perfect. I  think this experience was special to me, and I will treasure this memory in my mind.

My result is nothing...

    My result is nothing….

I'd wake up early morning at five O’clock. I had been waiting for the day with anxiety and curiosity on that day. I took bath and prayed to god to grant my success and really hope that it becomes a reality. I was somewhat uneasy and restless. My mind was swinging between hope and fear. It was a strange stage of anxiety and expectation. My parents had high expectation on me. At the moment I was sure that I would pass and get the better result then before so my parents not disappointed with me again. I want to makes them happy. They are everything to me. I really feared that if I failed or lost division.
After finished prayer, my mother called me to get breakfast. The newspaper-boy had not yet come. The sand of the time was running out. The sun is shining brightly. Now I get ready to school with hopes that all I want is fulfilled.
All the students suddenly wake up and pay homage to principle. I startled and stopped daydreaming. My heart beat frequently more than normal. All hormones in the body ready to burst. My mind was blurred. This result will determine my future. I want to be the successful person. It was the first day of March. My result of S.P.M was to be declared on that day.
My hands were shaking and heart throbbing. The principle announced the students who get straight A’s first. My best friend was the one of them. She much unexpected with what she get and her parents were very happy. Until the last names were announced, my name is not called. What a very disappointed I felt. I looked to my parents, they still waiting and smelling to me. For a while, my heart felt very relaxes. Now, it’s time for the rest students who no get their result. We queue up and waited for my turn.
Dup! Dap! Dup! Dap! My heart was beat. With trembling hands I looked the certificate. I thanked to Almighty Allah for the success which he granted me. At least, I not get failed for the killer subjects like additional mathematics, biology, chemistry and physic because that subjects were very important to me to score better. Then I ran to my parents and gave them the good news to me. They was overwhelmed with joy and accepted what I get with an open heart and pleased with the conditions. All my friends past and get the better result. The percentage who failed was very small and less than before. Even the result I get is not the best one, yet my parents still give me a small present. To me, even it was a small presents, it was my precious thing that I want to keep for my life. My parents were the best and I will appreciate them.
Arrived at home, my brother and sisters got up and rejoiced. The whole atmosphere of the house was at once changed. Relatives, grandfather and grandmother poured in to congratulate me. Tea and sweet were served to all who came. I started to cry. Even my result is not the best, the still came and congrats me like I get straight A’s. All were in jolly and happy mood. My mother prepared nice dishes for the lunch. Two of my friends were also invited to dinner. They all congratulated me. We embraced with each other and enjoy our dinner happily.
That was the very memorable story that I can’t forget as it bring a spirit to me to be more hardworking and success for my future. Now, I’m students of universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and I will try my best to graduate. Here, everything was in my hand and only I will decide who am I in next four year.

Zero to hero!

It happens during my junior year at secondary school. I and a few of my friends joined a basketball team in my school. That’s team consist mostly was our senior. We heard many bad rumours about them so this make we felt so scary. But we tried our best to go on with them. After a few weeks hangout and training with them, lastly we can cooperate and becoming  friends. Every day, we must run around the court about ten times. It was very tired when in morning we need went to school but in evening we must training. So it was tough to us at the first time but after a few weeks we can adapted with training daily. The tournament around the corner, we feel like our stomach full with butterflies. We were so nervous because our rival mostly experienced players. But my coach told us to ignore about that and just do your best.

On the day of tournament, we arrived at SMK(J) Sin Min. At that time we realized that we was the only malay’s school in that tournament. For the first game, we did many mistakes and our coach always reminding us to focus on the games. Finally, we qualified to final match after through many obstacles and hard time. We shouted with joy . It was  surprising to us, when our school qualified to final. So, I think this was our chances to prove to all people that we entered the game not just for fun. During the final match, we only had twelve people for the cheers team but for the rival team, they had bringing all students of their school to support their team like a dime of dozen. It was so nervous to us. When we got the ball, their cheers team will boo to us. Our pressure was increasing due to their mock toward us. Our captens told us that our rival was a champion during last year tournaments.

Even though, we lost to them but we felt like on top of the world. We got many experiences and lessons through this game. We learnt how to control our pressure even they had mock us. We also learnt to increase our discipline as an example we must punctured for the training. From this game also, I had knowing my teammates deeply and we also go through thick and thin together. Lastly, we had turned ourself from zero to hero but not so good like Michael Jordan, a famous basketball player.

5 Speaking Rules you need to know!

1. Don't study grammar too much

This rule might sound strange to many ESL students, but it is one of the most important rules. If you want to pass examinations, then study grammar. However, if you want to become fluent in English, then you should try to learn English without studying the grammar.

Studying grammar will only slow you down and confuse you. You will think about the rules when creating sentences instead of naturally saying a sentence like a native. Remember that only a small fraction of English speakers know more than 20% of all the grammar rules. Many ESL students know more grammar than native speakers. I can confidently say this with experience. I am a native English speaker, majored in English Literature, and have been teaching English for more than 10 years. However, many of my students know more details about English grammar than I do. I can easily look up the definition and apply it, but I don't know it off the top of my head.

I often ask my native English friends some grammar questions, and only a few of them know the correct answer. However, they are fluent in English and can read, speak, listen, and communicate effectively.

Do you want to be able to recite the definition of a causative verb, or do you want to be able to speak English fluently?

2. Learn and study phrases
Many students learn vocabulary and try to put many words together to create a proper sentence. It amazes me how many words some of my students know, but they cannot create a proper sentence. The reason is because they didn't study phrases. When children learn a language, they learn both words and phrases together. Likewise, you need to study and learn phrases.

If you know 1000 words, you might not be able to say one correct sentence. But if you know 1 phrase, you can make hundreds of correct sentences. If you know 100 phrases, you will be surprised at how many correct sentences you will be able to say. Finally, when you know only a 1000 phrases, you will be almost a fluent English speaker.

The English Speaking Basics section is a great example of making numerous sentences with a single phrase. So don't spend hours and hours learning many different words. Use that time to study phrases instead and you will be closer to English fluency.

Don't translate

When you want to create an English sentence, do not translate the words from your Mother tongue. The order of words is probably completely different and you will be both slow and incorrect by doing this. Instead, learn phrases and sentences so you don't have to think about the words you are saying. It should be automatic.

Another problem with translating is that you will be trying to incorporate grammar rules that you have learned. Translating and thinking about the grammar to create English sentences is incorrect and should be avoided.

3. Reading and Listening is NOT enough. Practice Speaking what you hear!

Reading, listening, and speaking are the most important aspects of any language. The same is true for English. However, speaking is the only requirement to be fluent. It is normal for babies and children to learn speaking first, become fluent, then start reading, then writing. So the natural order is listening, speaking, reading, then writing.

First Problem
Isn't it strange that schools across the world teach reading first, then writing, then listening, and finally speaking? Although it is different, the main reason is because when you learn a second language, you need to read material to understand and learn it. So even though the natural order is listening, speaking, reading, then writing, the order for ESL students is reading, listening, speaking, then writing.

Second Problem
The reason many people can read and listen is because that's all they practice. But in order to speak English fluently, you need to practice speaking. Don't stop at the listening portion, and when you study, don't just listen. Speak out loud the material you are listening to and practice what you hear. Practice speaking out loud until your mouth and brain can do it without any effort. By doing so, you will be able to speak English fluently.

4. Submerge yourself

Being able to speak a language is not related to how smart you are. Anyone can learn how to speak any language. This is a proven fact by everyone in the world. Everyone can speak at least one language. Whether you are intelligent, or lacking some brain power, you are able to speak one language.

This was achieved by being around that language at all times. In your country, you hear and speak your language constantly. You will notice that many people who are good English speakers are the ones who studied in an English speaking school. They can speak English not because they went to an English speaking school, but because they had an environment where they can be around English speaking people constantly.

There are also some people who study abroad and learn very little. That is because they went to an English speaking school, but found friends from their own country and didn't practice English.

You don't have to go anywhere to become a fluent English speaker. You only need to surround yourself with English. You can do this by making rules with your existing friends that you will only speak English. You can also carry around an iPod and constantly listen to English sentences. As you can see, you can achieve results by changing what your surroundings are. Submerge yourself in English and you will learn several times faster.

TalkEnglish Offline Version is now ready for download. In this package, you can utilize over 8000 audio files to completely surround yourself in English. There are over 13.5 hours of audio files that are not available in the web form. This package is available at the English Download page. Take advantage of this opportunity and start learning English faster. 5. Study correct material

A common phrase that is incorrect is, "Practice makes perfect." This is far from the truth. Practice only makes what you are practicing permanent. If you practice the incorrect sentence, you will have perfected saying the sentence incorrectly. Therefore, it is important that you study material that is commonly used by most people.

Another problem I see is that many students study the news. However, the language they speak is more formal and the content they use is more political and not used in regular life. It is important to understand what they are saying, but this is more of an advanced lesson that should be studied after learning the fundamental basics of English.

Studying English with a friend who is not a native English speaker is both good and bad. You should be aware of the pros and cons of speaking with a non native speaking friend. Practicing with a non native person will give you practice. You can also motivate each other and point out basic mistakes. But you might pick up bad habits from one another if you are not sure about what are correct and incorrect sentences. So use these practice times as a time period to practice the correct material you studied. Not to learn how to say a sentence.

In short, study English material that you can trust, that is commonly used, and that is correct.

Summary

These are the rules that will help you achieve your goal of speaking English fluently. All the teachings and lessons on TalkEnglish.com follow this method so you have the tools you need to achieve your goal right here on TalkEnglish.com.
